China power plant to have two ultra-supercritical units added

Addition of new units are designed to help plant in central China contribute to economic development and improved grid stability

11/04/2011

Two new 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical power generating units under construction at the China Resources Puqi power plant, and Emerson Process Management will install its Ovation expert control system. The contract was awarded by China Resources Power Holdings Company Ltd., owner of the plant.

The power plant is located in China’s Hubei province, near the Yangtze River. It currently consists of two 600-MW, coal-fired units that have utilized Ovation technology since they went into service in 2004. The new ultra-supercritical units, which are expected to begin commercial operation in the second half of 2012, are designed to contribute to the region’s economic development and improved grid stability by offsetting megawatts lost when existing hydro-electric power stations are unable to meet demand.

As part of its automation solution at Puqi, Emerson will supply a total of 64 redundant Ovation controllers and 23 workstations. An Ovation system at each unit will perform data acquisition as well as monitor and control the boiler and turbine supplied by Shanghai Electric Group. Unifying boiler and turbine controls provides improved unit stability, responsiveness and thermal efficiencies; tighter overall control of plant operations; and a clearer view of key plant and turbine parameters.

The technology will also manage each unit’s modulating control system, sequence control system, electrical control system, furnace safety supervisory system, feedwater turbine control system and balance-of-plant processes. In addition, Ovation will monitor and control systems common to both units using multi-networking technology. In all, the Ovation control systems will manage approximately 26,100 I/O points.
