Smart-Encoder. The Smart-Encoder is a new line of rotary encoders that are field programmable through a built-in LED display and two push-buttons, allowing for programming and adaptation to a wide variety of applications without the need for a computer, cable, or software. This is a Control Engineering 2012 Engineers’ Choice finalist.AVG Automation’s Autotech Technologies division has released the new Smart-Encoder line, which represents a paradigm shift in rotary encoders. A manufacturing plant with a wide variety of machinery may have more than a dozen different types of rotary encoders. Since an encoder is an electromechanical device with limited life, it is typically a high-maintenance part needing many replacements. The new all-in-one Smart-Encoder’s novel features allow it to be programmed and adapted to an application right on the machine, without the need for a computer, cable, or software—reducing downtime and express orders for new encoders.

The Smart-Encoder’s built-in LED display allows the user to check on its operation on the spot as it shows both counts and RPM. In addition, through a simple two-button interface, the Smart-Encoder can be configured as an incremental or absolute encoder with either Binary, BCD or Gray code formats. Quadrature incremental is programmable up to 1,024 counts per revolution, and the Absolute model can be programmed up to 4,096 counts per rev. Smart-Encoder is available in the industry standard 2.5-in. industrial housing or a 4.0-in. heavy-duty housing. Both have NEMA 4/4X ratings and are available in explosion-proof and submersible models. Additionally, the encoders are designed to be direct drop-in replacements for other major brands. Made in America, Autotech Technologies’ Smart-Encoder line of products brings a new, intuitive approach to encoders that can eliminate the need to maintain inventory of many different kinds of encoders, while remaining cost-competitive.
