Integrated, open PLC and motion programming for packaging

IndraMotion for Packaging from Bosch Rexroth is designed to reduce the amount of engineering by implementing all PLC and motion programming tasks in the same same programming language.

The system solution IndraMotion for Packaging helps to reduce the amount of engineering. Courtesy: Bosch RexrothBosch Rexroth open system solution, IndraMotion for Packaging, is available with software version 12 and comes with a series of additional functions allowing users to comfortably program robotics applications with the PLC in accordance with IEC 61131-3. Multi-Ethernet interfaces on controls and drives - including on the further developed motor-integrated IndraDrive Mi drives - reduce the costs for OEM having to adapt their solutions to end user requirements.

With the latest software version, which incorporates the CoDeSys V3 run-time system and comprehensive PLCopen function libraries, users can implement all PLC and motion programming tasks, including individual drives, synchronized movements and robotics, in the IEC 61131-3 programming languages. This allows for a much more efficient division of work and reduces the amount of engineering involved in made-to-order constructions. Furthermore, IndraMotion for Packaging contains numerous technology functions that are typical in the packaging industry, such as print mark control, product grouping, magic belt or intermittent duty cycle.

In addition, the Drive and Control Specialist provides a function - the patented FlexProfile - with which machine manufacturers are able to fulfill customers' requests for higher flexibility and product or format changeovers at the press of a button. FlexProfile simplifies handling electronic cams because, among other things, the software automatically adapts all drive movements to the changed parameters. To accomplish this, programmers use the engineering tool CamBuilder from the IndraWorks environment to generate synchronous movements graphically. From there, CamBuilder then automatically generates the program code, replacing the previously timeconsuming and error-prone step of manual programming.

With the motor-integrated IndraDrive Mi servo drives, Rexroth increases the degree by which decentralized automation concepts can be modularized. Using a Multi-Ethernet interface, the servo drives can be comfortably integrated into a variety of Ethernet-based field buses, including SERCOS III, Profinet IO (RT), EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT. This enables OEM to implement different automation structures with one single type of hardware, thereby simplifying logistics and spare parts management. In addition, pneumatic components and hydraulic actuators can be connected to the IndraDrive Mi via SERCOS III at a reduced cost.

The drive-integrated safety function of the IndraDrive Mi eliminates hardware and reduces the need for wiring. The STO safety function ensures the safety of the respective axes without requiring an additional control. This facilitates the modular design of machines. When the STO function is activated, the drive will interrupt the current to the connected motor within mere milliseconds. Likewise, it prevents the motor from being restarted accidentally. The STO function in the IndraDrive Mi servo drives is certified Cat 4 PL e according to EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 according to EN 62061.
