Control Engineering Leader Under 40, class of 2010 logoAchievements: I've been involved with controls for more than 15 years: first at an automation distributor and then with a medical device manufacturer. As a brief stint as a consultant, I developed the controls that were used to introduce new products by Steve Jobs at MAC World keynote addresses. Also, I held automation training sessions for my technicians to teach them wiring, programming, and basic robotic architecture. My belief is that automation is a combination of various disciplines combining to solve a problem. What can be more beautiful than that?

Non-work hobbies: My six-year-old daughter and I competed in Robogames 2009 (http://robogames.net) and won first place in the 1-lb division with the robot Xnabia. I bought an Arduino and programmed an old Basic Stamp microcontroller.

Engineering hobbies: I want to put together board-level electronics and reduce the cost of a small embedded system. Also, I started putting together a Wordpress website, but haven't finished it (www.ijohnsen.com). Lastly, I just built a PC with an Intel i5 540, (2) 1.5 TB hard drives in RAID 0, with 8 GB of RAM. Sweet.
