Motor Summit 2010 just around the corner

Motor Summit 2010 will convene in Zurich, Switzerland, Oct. 26-28, 2010, bringing together experts from research, government, and the private sector with the intent of supporting various ongoing processes in IEA’s new Implementing Agreement 4E.

More efficient use of energy is a requirement to sustain the development of modern economies and societies. Electric motors and motor systems in industrial and infrastructure applications—along with myriad pumps, fans, and compressors in buildings—are said to account for 40% of the world’s total electricity consumption. Yet it’s within the potential of new and existing technologies to substantially reduce the energy demand of these motor systems worldwide and within practical payback periods. The catch is to overcome market barriers.

Motor Summit 2010 will convene for the purpose of providing an international forum to debate relevant motor system efficiency issues in Zurich, Switzerland, Oct. 26-28, 2010. The agenda will focus on the latest technological innovations, current state of market penetration, as well as strategies and actions needed to overcome barriers that hinder widespread use of highly efficient motor systems. Organizers and sponsors of Motor Summit 2010 are The Swiss Agency for Efficient Energy Use (S.A.F.E.), in collaboration with the Electric Motor Systems Annex of the International Energy Agency’s Efficient Electrical End-Use Equipment program (IEA 4E EMSA) and the national SwissEnergy program.

Following on traditions of prior summits in `07 and ’08, this third Motor Summit will bring together experts from research, government, and the private sector with the intent of supporting various ongoing processes in IEA’s new Implementing Agreement 4E, namely:

  • European Union’s Energy-using Products Ecodesign Directive;
  • Harmonized IEC motor testing and energy classification standards; and
  • NEMA Premium Motors MEPS (minimum efficiency performance standard), which is set to become U.S. law in 2011.

Summit segments will consist of “International strategy day” on Oct. 27, “Swiss implementation day” on Oct. 28, and two EMSA workshops at the same location:

  • IEA 4E: Testing Centers, on Oct. 26; and
  • New Motor Technology, on Oct. 28.

As of early October, some 130 participants from 19 countries are scheduled to attend the event. Control Engineering was a participant at Motor Summit 2008 (see related articles).
