Festo’s new SFAM 90 airflow sensor can precisely monitor an entire machine’s airflow to detect conditions that are wasting energy—conditions that also indicate pneumatic valves and actuators are not performing to specifications. With this timely diagnostic information, maintenance personnel can quickly react to problems before those become major cost, quality, or productivity issues.
The modular SFAM 90 can be operated as a stand-alone unit or combined with the Festo MS series air preparation systems and pressure sensors. Using the combined configuration provides an enterprise with an advanced, cost-justified, energy-saving, productivity-enhancing, and preventive maintenance solution for pneumatics.
The SFAM 90 provides absolute flow information and accumulated air consumption measurement. It features an adjustable consumption-based switching impulse for accumulated air consumption measurement via the switching output. It can provide precise information even when flow conditions are fluctuating and unreliable. With its highly dynamic response of 1:100, the sensor covers an extensive measuring range with a specified accuracy.
The large, illuminated LCD display increases operational safety and makes flow rate and consumption values easy to read. Values outside of the measuring range are shown as flashing figures on the display, and the color of the display changes. Threshold values can be identified over long distances or if the sensor is inaccessible.
NPN/PNP can be switched via software. Having either NPN or PNP in one unit reduces the need for stocks of components, cuts costs, and results in fewer purchasing and design decisions. Values shown on the display can be set for DIN1343, ISO 2533, or ISO 6358 standards. Values can be filtered and averaged independently of the analog output in the case of high measurement dynamics. There is also simple switching between consumption and flow data indicators.
The SFAM 90 is compact, which makes for flexible installation. The unidirectional flow sensor offers a choice of flow direction left to right or right to left. It is plug and play, with clear and fast menu navigation and manual consumption measurement with start/stop and reset functionality.
Festo offers pre-assembled solutions for compressed air preparation, flow, and pressure monitoring. These solutions come with one part number, which simplifies the design and purchasing process. The subassemblies are supplied ready to install. Festo also supplies compressed air system accessories, such as tubing and fittings. Tubing materials appropriate to the environment prevent chemical, physical, and microbial damage. Festo tubing can be hydrolysis-resistant, flame-retardant, heat-resistant, antistatic, and suitable for use in the food industry. Fittings use Festo modern sealing rings and support functions to ensure leak-proof and reusable screw connections, the company said.
