Radar level transmitter for solids
Siemens introduces its Sitrans LR560 using 78 GHz (W band) for high accuracy with dusty solids.
Siemens Industry Automation Division has announced its launch of the Sitrans LR560, which it characterizes as the first 78 GHz (W Band) microwave radar level transmitter for solids level measurement. Siemens says the new unit combines level measuring with superior accuracy in tough environments, with intelligent signal processing for optimum performance at all operating stages.
The Sitrans LR560 transmitter is equipped with a newly developed lens-style antenna and uses non-contacting two-wire FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar technology. This new design is particularly suited for hot (up to 392 °F / 200 °C), dusty applications such as cement powder, plastic powder or pellets, grain, coal, wood powder, and fly ash. The vessel can be pressurized up to 44 psi (3 bar). Instrumentation technicians can change programming even in a hazardous environment using an intrinsically safe handheld programmer without having to open the instrument’s lid.
The transmitter has a measurement range of 100 m (328 ft.), using a narrow four-degree beam. This helps it avoid silo wall obstructions and other installation interferences, allowing it to be installed virtually anywhere on the top of the silo. Its high frequency also enables the unit to emit a very short wavelength to provide exceptional signal reflection, even from solids with a steep angle of repose. The high resolution graphical interface with its Quick Start Wizard menu guides the user and expedites start-time to less than one minute for accurate and reliable level measurement readings without any fine-tuning.
Connectivity options include HART, Profibus PA, or Foundation fieldbus protocols. Programming is supported locally with pushbuttons or an infrared handheld programmer. The transmitter also supports remote configuration and diagnostics with Siemens’ Simatic PDM (process device manager), Emerson AMS, or Pactware using Siemens DTM. The local display interface features a backlit display and can be rotated to four positions for easier viewing.
The antenna is resistant to material build-up, but also has a built-in purge system for cleaning exceptionally sticky solids material. While its high-frequency operation normally makes aiming unnecessary, an optional aiming flange helps direct the beam to an area of specific interest, such as the discharge area of a silo cone. Sitrans LR560 includes an optional graphical local display interface that improves setup and operation using an intuitive Quick Start Wizard, and echo profile display for diagnostic support.
