SPS Show: Molex makes new PROFIBUS connections

Device protocol kit, remote module allow for expanded use of controllers

Molex made two major product announcements at the SPS Show in Nuremburg this week, designed to improve connectivity for PROFINET devices and a wide variety of controllers.

The Brad IO-Device protocol development kit version 2.2 for PROFINET enables OEMs to develop and market their own branded PROFINET IO devices. Fully-compliant with PROFINET IO version 2.2 specifications, the Molex protocol stack supports conformance Class-B and has already been integrated on customer system platforms and successfully PNO-certified by the PROFIBUS User Organisation.

The Molex IO-Device stack can be ported on any customer platform both quickly and easily. At the SPS exhibition, Molex demonstrated the IO-Device stack’s portability by running it on an Apple iPad tablet PC connected to a Siemens S7-300 controller. The iPad application simulates a Molex IP67 PROFINET I/O device where it is possible to start and stop the stack, read inputs and write outputs digital value, and generate alarms.

Molex also debuted the Brad SST PB3 Remote Module for PROFIBUS. This stand-alone hardware platform includes PROFIBUS and Ethernet communication ports, enabling fast and easy connectivity to any Rockwell ControlLogix and CompactLogix controller.  The PB3 module, which will be available next year, features a unique remote design that enables it to be installed close to the PROFIBUS field device, reducing the expensive cabling costs that can occur when the controller and field device are in different locations.

“The PB3 module provides the same features of an in-chassis module, but is more flexible and easier to use,” said Molex product manager Eric Gory.  “Its remote design means the PB3 module can be installed in any convenient location such as inside cabinets, on machines or in cells. Additionally, because of its Ethernet media, the PB3 module can be used in specific applications where a wireless connection is required.”

The PB3 Remote Module fits factory automation, process control and machine building applications.  It is fully integrated into the Rockwell Software Architecture through features such as ‘Add-on-Instructions’, which saves integration time; Ethernet switch with redundancy capability, direct access to I/O data without the need to write ladder logic and complete access to PROFIBUS DP-V1 services and device diagnostics.
