Video: Yaskawa talks Variable Frequency Drives

Yaskawa and the Milwaukee School of Engineering show how a variable frequency drive is more efficient for air handling applications.

Control Engineering Content Manager Peter Welander talks with Yaskawa's Manager of Marketing Communications Neil Koepke about the benefits of using variable frequency drives. While Welander visited the Americas headquarters for Yaskawa in Waukegan, Illinois, Koepke showed three different types of motors in a demonstrator that was built jointly by Yaskawa and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The demonstrator's first cell shows a constant speed across-the-line motor and its flow control is varied with an outlet damper. In the second cell, a three-phase motor, which is constant speed, operated across-the-line, uses a inlet-guide vein for the flow control means. In the third cell, a variable frequency drive operates a three-phase motor and the drive itself controls the airflow in its environment.
