Honeywell's dynamic operator training simulator, UniSim Operations Suite, now offers an immersive, 3D operating environment to present production scenarios and train operators before they enter the control room. This is a Control Engineering 2013 Engineers' Choice finalist.A major challenge for companies in the process industries is training their employees to operate in a plant environment in the most realistic way possible. Simulating a safe, realistic process environment, however, is a tall order. For more than 30 years, Honeywell has helped plants train operators and engineers on how to respond to a wide range of potential incidents before they enter the control room, enabling them to react more quickly and diffuse issues before they occur.

Striving to make simulation as realistic as possible, Honeywell now offers an enhanced, 3D-based simulator solution for safety engineering as well as operator training as part of its UniSim Operations Suite. This helps the companies in the process industries further improve the safety and reliability of their plants, and to optimize operating performance. By coupling immersive, 3D visualization technology with process and accident simulation technologies, UniSim Operations includes a plant simulator that enables better visualization of process operations, allowing engineers, distributed control system and field operators, maintenance crews, and management to view the process environment simultaneously.

Chemical plant operators, for instance, can experience a simulated 3D environment of a catalyst injection unit of a polypropylene plant. This provides a real world feel and experience from the safety of a remote location. With this type of immersive simulation experience, users grasp the genesis and progression of incidents with astonishing realism, leading to more-informed decision making.

As a leader in operator training solutions to the process industries, Honeywell continues to help users maintain their production by recognizing and avoiding incidents that result in production losses, equipment damage, personnel injury, and environmental hazard. Today, its 3D-based solution for safety engineering and operator training transforms simulation, taking it beyond the standard training room and extending it into the field.
