The new performance class for distributed I/O, the new Rexroth S20 distributed I/O system with IP 20 protection class provides a compact and modular package for fast, robust and easy-to-implement I/O networks on demanding automation platforms. This is a Control Engineering 2013 Engineers' Choice finalist.Combining robust design with ultrafast performance, the IndraControl S20 I/O module is tailor-made for today's demanding high-speed automation systems. It features an innovative bus coupler architecture for flexible processing of signals and acyclic diagnoses, enabling an intelligent system bus for high-performance optimized data throughput, with a typical cycle time of 10 microsecond (µs).

The IndraControl S20 module provides the highest accuracy in the overall system with synchronous data exchange to a Sercos III network. This enables synchronization of I/O with the motion network, maximizing the stability, throughput and integration of data exchange across an automation system. This I/O architecture and its time synchronization also helps speed controls authoring and machine commissioning, since the I/O data is synched with the motion network processing.  The IndraControl S20 offers the fastest signal processing with the shortest update rates of 1 µs per module.

Since the Rexroth implementation of the Sercos III bus uses a deterministic update time, it's a key part of Rexroth's commitment to offer a complete Sercos III fieldbus for motion, control and I/O. The S20 also provides shortened reaction times in the application for increased precision of measurements, control quality and work cycles. The IndraControl S20 portfolio includes analog and digital input and output modules, technology modules and bus couplers. Designed to deliver rugged, long-lasting performance in a wide range of machine applications and plant environments, it features: 

  • Temperature range operation of -25 C to +60°C
  • Extremely resistant to EMC influences with adjustable filter times
  • Robust and continuous shock-resistant electromechanics up to 10 g
  • Future-proof via reduced radiation according to EN 55022 class B
