A program is underway to develop a device allowing universal connections between distributed-generation resources and utility grids. The proposed device would eliminate one of the major hurdles to broader adoption of distributed generation, developers say.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the research arm of the electric-utility industry, is leading the effort to design the new "GridGateway." As proposed, the unit would provide "plug-and-play" compatibility between any distributed resource and the connecting, standard 200-amp, single-phase meter-base electrical service. It would be programmable, to allow uploading of unique system-protection functions. The system would allow the electric utility company to maintain control over the connection and to periodically test its integrity.

Developers suggest that, over time, this device could help bring down the cost of DG systems, by providing a standardized protocol applicable to all connections. EPRI is currently seeking partners to participate in the design effort.
