2009 General Assembly draws capacity crowd in Japan

The 2009 General Assembly attracted a capacity crowd of FOUNDATION fieldbus end users, suppliers, system integrators, engineering firms, and other industry stakeholders from around the world.

A capacity crowd was on hand as the Fieldbus Foundation conducted its 2009 General Assembly March 4-5 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Yokohama, Japan. The audience included FOUNDATION fieldbus end users, suppliers, system integrators, engineering firms, and industry stakeholders from around the world.

Hideaki Miura, senior executive officer and general manager, engineering division, JGC Corp., gave the keynote address, which provided valuable insights into the adoption of FOUNDATION technology and an authoritative perspective on the growth in operational intelligence. JGC Corp. first applied fieldbus technology in a pilot plant at its own laboratory in the late 1990s. In 2000, the company completed a small-scale FOUNDATION fieldbus application—the first Japanese commercial installation—in a pharmaceutical facility. Since then, JGC Corp. has implemented a number of major FOUNDATION projects in the process industries, including petrochemical, gas processing, refining, and alternative energy.

The General Assembly program included an overview of Fieldbus Foundation activities worldwide and presentations from FOUNDATION technology experts on process integrity, open scalable integration, and business intelligence. It also featured presentations by major end users who have installed FOUNDATION fieldbus in their industrial operations. End user speakers included:

  • John Rezabek, ISP Corp.
  • Jasbir Singh, Essar Refinery Ltd.
  • Takuo Suzuki, Mitsubishi Chemical Engineering
  • Bindert Douma, Shell Global Solutions

The Fieldbus Foundation staff updated attendees on such current FOUNDATION technology developments as wireless implementation, safety solutions, field device integration, Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL), and field diagnostics. The foundation also briefed Asia/Pacific automation trade press representatives in attendance on such key Fieldbus Foundation matters as:

  • Plans to conduct end-user demonstrations of the foundation’s wireless and remote I/O (WIO) development;
  • Scheduled 2009 events promoting the adoption of FOUNDATION fieldbus in the Asia/Pacific region;
  • 2009 recipients of the James O. Gray Educational Scholarship award;
  • Establishment of an Asia/Pacific Executive Advisory Council (AP-EAC);
  • Release of the final FOUNDATION fieldbus Diagnostic Profiles Specification;
  • Release of the FOUNDATION fieldbus Host Test Kit DD Application Test Module; and
  • Introduction of device development solutions for FOUNDATION for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF).
The Fieldbus Foundation’s 2009 General Assembly took place March 4-5 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Yokohama, Japan.

Foundation President and CEO Rich Timoney called the General Assembly “an important global event supporting our technology.” Said Timoney, “FOUNDATION fieldbus has gained significant market share over the last several years and continues to grow at a very rapid pace. In these difficult economic times, leading-edge technologies such as FOUNDATION fieldbus provide a platform for reductions in both CapEx and OpEx. Reductions in time-to-calibrate, commission, and start-up are essential during the build phase of projects. Improved asset utilization, reduction in maintenance costs, and tighter control translate into improved operating performance and enhanced competitiveness.”

Fieldbus Foundation forms Asia/Pacific Executive Advisory Council

The Fieldbus Foundation’s newly formed Asia/Pacific Executive Advisory Council (AP-EAC) consists of leading plant automation suppliers who will help drive the adoption of FOUNDATION fieldbus technology by process end users in East Asia, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia/New Zealand. Formation of the AP-EAC and an Asia/Pacific steering committee is part of the Fieldbus Foundation’s organizational structure for the region. AP-EAC includes representatives from ABB, Emerson Process Management, Invensys, MTL, Pepperl+Fuchs, Rockwell Automation, Turck, R. Stahl, Yamatake, and Yokogawa.

The new EAC Advisory Council, said Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Rich Timoney, will play a key role in increasing industry acceptance of FOUNDATION technology. “The Asia/Pacific market is setting the worldwide pace for manufacturing growth and Greenfield plant construction,” Timoney continued. “We have expanded our presence in this part of the world to better support users of FOUNDATION-based control systems in a wide range of industrial process control applications.”

The AP-EAC held its first meeting March 3, 2009, at the Pan Pacific Yokohama Bay hotel in Yokohama, Japan. Attendees formally defined the EAC organization and elected the council’s inaugural officers. Fieldbus Foundation Asia/Pacific Steering Committee members also attended the meeting to help launch the new Asia/Pacific management organization.

Van Pelt appointed Foundation corporate secretary

Marc Van Pelt

Pepperl+Fuchs Executive Marc Van Pelt has been appointed Fieldbus Foundation corporate secretary. Van Pelt will add the new responsibilities to his current positions as the foundation’s vice-president, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) operations and chairman of the EMEA steering committee. He has also been a member of the Fieldbus Foundation European Marketing Committee (FF-EMC) for more than a decade.

Van Pelt is sales director, process automation, for Western Europe and Africa, and a 20-year employee of Pepperl+Fuchs, a leading developer and manufacturer of electronic sensors and components for the global automation market. Accepting his new role, Van Pelt said, “Taking a corporate function in combination with my role as vice president, EMEA operations, will surely intensify even more the relationship between the global and EMEA levels, which will be to the benefit of the entire foundation.”

Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Rich Timoney welcomed the appointment of Van Pelt as corporate secretary, saying, “Marc Van Pelt has been a tremendous asset to the Fieldbus Foundation during his tenure as vice president, EMEA operations, and I am certain he will do an excellent job in his new corporate role with our organization. The Fieldbus Foundation is taking steps to strengthen our organizational structure in support of the FOUNDATION fieldbus supplier and end-user communities. By increasing our worldwide capabilities and resources, we are better able to serve industry stakeholders seeking greater operational excellence through implementation of the FOUNDATION automation infrastructure.”

Coatzacoalcos seminar attracts record crowd, MarCom elects new officers

The first 2009 FOUNDATION fieldbus end-user seminar in Mexico, held Feb. 19 in Coatzacoalcos, far exceeded anticipated attendance, drawing more than 185 attendees.

 

The strong support for the Coatzacoalcos seminar reflects the growing interest of Mexico’s industrial community in FOUNDATION technology.

The Fieldbus Foundation’s Mexican Marketing Committee (FFMMC) recently elected new officers. This group was organized to support the adoption of FOUNDATION technology by automation end users, and to ensure the operational excellence of process plants throughout Mexican industry. Officers for 2009 include Manuel Negrete, Endress+Hauser, chairman; Ismael Solis de Jesus, Rockwell Automation, vice-chairman; and Ramon Ramirez, ABB, secretary/treasurer. The new leaders replace outgoing officers Daniel Zamorano, MTL, chairman; Oscar Matus, Smar, vice-chairman; and Daniel Gutierrez, Pepperl+Fuchs, secretary/treasurer.

Praising the outgoing officials, Fieldbus Foundation Marketing Manager Bill Tatum noted they had played a significant role in the growth of FOUNDATION fieldbus in the Mexican market. “The foundation’s Mexican Marketing Committee has done an outstanding job of promoting our technology to Mexico’s automation end user community,” said Tatum. “We had over 140 participants at our first fieldbus educational seminar in Mexico City in June 2008, plus many more visitors to our exhibit at the ISA Mexico show that same week.”

Tatum highlighted the new marketing committee team’s plans for increasing the acceptance of FOUNDATION fieldbus in Mexico. Its goals include the development of a Mexico page on the Fieldbus Foundation’s Website and an expanded schedule of technology events in various parts of the country. The first FOUNDATION fieldbus end-user seminar of 2009, held Feb. 19 in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, attracted more than 185 attendees. It provided valuable insights into the implementation of fieldbus-based automation solutions by Mexican industry leaders.

Tatum called the interest in FOUNDATION technology in Mexico overwhelming. “To have a seminar that was scheduled to have an attendance of 120 actually draw over 185 participants demonstrates the level of commitment in the growing Latin American market,” he said. “The Fieldbus Foundation is positioned to take advantage of this growth through the efforts of our marketing committee in Mexico.”

Three students receive James O. Gray scholarships

Three students from around the globe have been named to receive James O. Gray-Fieldbus Foundation Educational Scholarships. The scholarship program, which honors the memory of James (Jim) O. Gray, a long-time Fieldbus Foundation leader who passed away in 2002, establishes a perpetual $250,000 endowment fund to provide awards to eligible students studying industrial automation.

The 2008-2009 winners include:

Ho Quan Hui, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore. Ho Quan Hui is pursuing a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Singapore Polytechnic. He has completed his certification in industrial control and will graduate in 2009. A “Director’s Honor Roll” recipient from Singapore Polytechnic for the past two years, Quan Hui participated in the World Skill Competition Singapore in 2008 and won the bronze award in “industrial control.”
   
Lynden Lepage, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Lynden Lepage is seeking a degree in industrial instrumentation engineering from SAIT. After completing these studies, he will pursue a university degree supporting a career path in his home province of Saskatchewan. Lynden is an active member of the SAIT ISA student section.
   
Bernadette Coates, Lee College, Baytown, Texas, USA. Bernadette Coates recently completed coursework for an Instrumentation Technician Certificate from Lee College. She is currently enrolled in drafting courses to increase her technical skills and hopes to work in an engineering environment as an instrumentation systems designer. Bernadette also plans to secure an associate degree at the community college level.
   

Jim Gray was sales and marketing manager for Invensys/Foxboro for 25 years. He was exceptionally active within the Fieldbus Foundation from its inception, and was secretary of the Board of Directors, a member of the Executive Committee, and a member of the U.S. Marketing Committee during his tenure.

Developer training courses set for May at Fieldbus Foundation headquarters

The Fieldbus Foundation will offer FOUNDATION fieldbus developer training in May 2009 at its headquarters in Austin, Texas. The vendor-neutral “Introduction to FOUNDATION Fieldbus” and “Advanced Principles of FOUNDATION Fieldbus” courses cover the key aspects of open, non-proprietary FOUNDATION fieldbus technology.

The one-day “Introduction to FOUNDATION Fieldbus” course will be offered on May 5; the three-day “Advanced Principles of FOUNDATION Fieldbus” course will be held May 6-8.

“Introduction to FOUNDATION Fieldbus” is designed for developers, end users, marketing professionals, applications engineers, system integrators, and others interested in obtaining a fundamental knowledge of FOUNDATION technology. Students become familiar with basic concepts and new terminology related to the FOUNDATION integrated architecture. They gain an understanding of the strategies for wiring and installing a fieldbus network. Design issues such as power requirements, device types, and topologies are emphasized. The recently updated course also includes new information about grounding and shielding, and safety instrumented functions (SIF).

“Advanced Principles of FOUNDATION Fieldbus” is intended for manufacturers and developers of fieldbus hardware and software. It is best suited for development engineers, test engineers, and those who need to understand the detailed, inner workings of a FOUNDATION fieldbus device. The course covers major tools used by FOUNDATION device developers. Students gain an understanding of the basics of the bus monitor and apply this tool in interactive exercises demonstrating fieldbus communications and the use of filters for network troubleshooting. The curriculum also addresses H1 and High Speed Ethernet (HSE) communications between fieldbus devices.

This advanced course includes updated information on alerting/alarming and Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL), and includes new sections on developments in field diagnostics and capability files. The new technology implements role-based diagnostics—in other words, the right information is sent to the appropriate person when they need it. The system of push diagnostics, rather than pull diagnostics, allows the user to receive alerts quicker and ensures they are delivered to the right people, instead of having to request information from the devices. The Device Development section incorporates previously included information, but has been expanded to describe the process more thoroughly.

End-user seminar targets ‘achieving operational excellence’

Free FOUNDATION fieldbus educational seminars will be held at various locations in North America in 2009. Based on the theme “Achieving Operational Excellence with FOUNDATION Technology,” the events are intended for end users, system integrators, and engineering firms seeking to learn about the economic benefits of the FOUNDATION automation architecture. Topics include:

End-user demos to showcase FOUNDATION infrastructure extensions

Plans are underway for a series of end-user demonstrations that will showcase Fieldbus Foundation wireless and remote I/O (WIO) developments. The live technology demos, scheduled for Brazil, Canada, Japan, The Netherlands, and the United States, will illustrate how new wireless and remote I/O solutions tighten the integration of process instrumentation with the FOUNDATION automation infrastructure. They will also highlight the latest Field Diagnostics developments that enhance the WIO solution.

The foundation’s WIO development project involves leading suppliers of plant automation equipment from around the world. The project is intended to develop use cases and requirements for High Speed Ethernet (HSE) remote and wireless communications in monitoring and control that are interoperable using function blocks and Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL). It encompasses solutions using FOUNDATION fieldbus and wireless technologies developed in accordance with the ISA100 standard and work of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Commenting on the planned demos, Dave Glanzer, Fieldbus Foundation director of technology development, said, “We are pleased with the progress of our WIO project and the support it has received from the industrial automation industry. WIO developments promise to advance the utilization of an open, interoperable fieldbus automation infrastructure incorporating both HSE and industrial wireless applications.”

Glanzer indicated the WIO project teams, including an HSE Remote I/O (RIO) team, HSE Backhaul team, and Wireless Sensor team, are responsible for developing device interoperability and network configuration solutions, validation of technical specifications, and interoperability test and registration procedures.

In October 2008, the Fieldbus Foundation and ISA announced an agreement to facilitate the implementation of wireless backhaul transport networks. This technology initiative is based on shared interests in serving the needs of end users and suppliers of wireless systems in industrial automation.

In June 2008, ISA100 leaders met and established ISA100.15: Wireless Backhaul Networks Working Group to develop and maintain a standard to address one or more dedicated or shared wireless backhauls to support technologies running multiple applications. The first of these backbones will be the Fieldbus Foundation’s HSE implementation.

In September 2008, the Fieldbus Foundation released its final FOUNDATION fieldbus Diagnostic Profiles Specification. Based on guidelines established by the NAMUR Working Group 2.6, the specification identifies “role-based diagnostics” for fieldbus equipment and defines a consistent set of parameters for diagnostic alarming. This approach supports categorization of diagnostics according to NE107 recommendations, thus ensuring the right diagnostic information is available to the right person at the right time. In addition, it allows diagnostics to be applied, as most appropriate, for a particular plant application such as process control engineering or asset management maintenance.

Companies participating in the WIO development include: ABB, Aniotek, APAT, Apprion, Chevron, Emerson Process Management, Endress+Hauser, Festo, Flexworks Solutions, Hodson Consulting, Honeywell Process Solutions, MaCT, MTL, OMNEX Control Systems, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, R. Stahl, RuggedCom, Sense-Comm Technology, Shell Global Solutions, Siemens, Smar, Softing, Turck, Westlock Controls, Yamatake, and Yokogawa.

New ARC whitepaper explains FOUNDATION SIF solution

Learn more about FOUNDATION Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) in a new whitepaper from the Fieldbus Foundation. Authored by the ARC Advisory Group, a leading research and advisory firm for manufacturing, energy, and supply chain solutions based in Dedham, MA, the document discusses the implications of FOUNDATION SIF (FF-SIF) technology for the global plant safety system market and end users.

FOUNDATION Fieldbus Safety Instrumented Functions Forge the Future of Process Safety explains how successful beta testing of FOUNDATION SIF will mean significant changes in the way automation end users approach Safety Instrumented System (SIS) implementations in process industry plants. In May 2008, the Fieldbus Foundation conducted a successful live demonstration and press day for FOUNDATION SIF technology at Shell Global Solutions in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. At the event, several leading energy companies described their use of FOUNDATION SIF in a wide range of industrial safety system applications.

In the new whitepaper, Larry O’Brien, ARC Advisory Group’s research director—process automation, describes how FOUNDATION SIF is a critical part of the FOUNDATION fieldbus automation infrastructure. FOUNDATION fieldbus’ industry-proven distributed function blocks and open communications protocol make it an ideal platform for advancing standards-based solutions for plant SIFs. FOUNDATION SIF lets end users reduce TCO (total cost of ownership) by extending fieldbus benefits into plant safety systems.

“It is very clear that end users want this technology and are striving to include FF-SIF systems in their project specifications,” said O’Brien. “Many major end users will probably be specifying FF-SIF systems for their new projects starting in 2011.”

The whitepaper reviews the history and development path of FOUNDATION SIF technology, and discusses SIF product registration, conformance to international standards, diagnostics functions and benefits, and future challenges. It also outlines key advantages of FOUNDATION SIF at the safety system layer.

According to O’Brien, “FF-SIF meets the IEC 61508 standard for functional safety systems up to SIL 3, and allows users to build safety systems that adhere to the IEC 61511 standard for functional safety in the process industries. The protocol has already received TÜV approval, and suppliers are going to start submitting their products for TÜV approval over the next year. This means that we should see actual products that are certified by TÜV available commercially some time in 2010.”

Endress+Hauser offers FOUNDATION fieldbus validation service

Endress+Hauser is now offering a FOUNDATION fieldbus validation service as part of their engineering portfolio. Diagnosis, examination, and qualification of new and existing fieldbus installations are provided, including:

  • IQ/OQ documents;
  • Execution of IQ/OQ; and
  • Training for use of IQ/OQ documents.

The IQ and OQ documents for FOUNDATION Fieldbus qualification are already proven in projects. They are compliant with the latest recommendations of the ISPE regarding qualification of bus installations, and are electronically editable but marked for the specific project.

MooreHawke’s Route-Master is first approved FISCO redundant system

Route-Master Fieldbus System from MooreHawke, a division of Moore Industries-International Inc. has a new ATEX approval (FM pending) as a redundant intrinsically-safe fieldbus system permitting the connection of any mix of FISCO and Entity devices. The company believes the product is the first fieldbus system approved to offer FISCO compatibility and power redundancy.

Route-Master consists of up to eight Trunk Isolator Modules in a 19-in. rack, each connected to one or more RM100 Fieldbus Device Couplers. This combination is now approved suitable for any mix of FISCO and Entity field devices. The RM100 rack incorporates hot-swappable and load-sharing redundant dc power cards and full galvanic isolation. Intrinsically-safe approvals extend to IEC Gas Group IIC (NEC Groups A and B), with an industry-best 350 mA per segment.

The duplex FISCO Route-Master gives a calculated MTBF of 468 years, at least five times better than a conventional simplex FISCO system. It also allows the full FOUNDATION fieldbus network length of 1900 m and 120 m spurs, double the normal FISCO restrictions.

Northwire Fieldbus cable designed for rugged industrial networks

DataCell FOUNDATION fieldbus cable from Northwire Inc., a leading manufacturer of cable for industrial networking, is offered for H1 networks in rugged plant environments using networked process automation and control.

The cables are easy to strip and rated for ITC/PLTC exposed run (ER) applications.
