Embedded computer: New small form factor specification The Small Form Factor Special Interest Group (SFF-SIG), led by embedded computer integrator WinSystems, announced an interconnect specification. Embedded in space: LDRA tool suite selected for Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle Space Program Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMCO) has selected the LDRA tool suite to enable developers on the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) program to achieve its software development goals. LDRA, a provider of automated software verification, will enable Orion developers to achieve the stringent safety-critical standards required to ensure safe transfer of the astronauts.
Better mousetrap: Design News searching for clever machine designs Have you built a better mousetrap? Control Engineering sister publication Design News wants you to tell them about the most amazing product you've designed in the past year. It could be profiled along with other great new products in Design News' Special Engineering Awards issue in September 2008. Old Tools: Retread your old machine tools to make them better than new! Siemens Energy & Automation implemented its strongest initiative to date in the area of machine retrofits. The company says its commitment evidences the SE&A directive to become a more visible and viable retrofit partner to the machine shops nationwide, who seek to improve their equipment performance and enhance their competitive position in their markets.
Machine vision and robotics into solar cell production equipment BIG motion: Ultra-precise Positioning for the largest telescope in the northern hemisphere After seven years of construction, the largest optical telescope in the northern hemisphere, the Gran Telescopio Canarias (Grantecan) on La Palma, Spain, has begun trial operation. Heidenhain model ERA 780C angle encoders are being used to position the telescope — a solution that has already proven itself in numerous telescope projects. The telescope rotates about two axes: elevation (vertical motion) and azimuth (horizontal motion). In addition, the motion of the earth has to be compensated during the sometimes hour-long observations. Wireless: Bluetooth vs. Bluetooth Most industrial applications require more than a standard Bluetooth wireless solution concerning robustness, optimized performance and enhanced reliability. Further, the solution must be possible to configure for a specific application by optimizing throughput, latency, power consumption, range, or a combination. Traditional Bluetooth technology versus industrial Bluetooth technology – this article guides through the necessities for the tough industrial applications.
Green drives: Energy-efficient drive systems will help raise productivity in Brazilian copper mine ABB says it recently won an order from Vale (formerly CVRD) to deliver gearless mill drive systems that will maximize productivity and energy efficiency at a new copper mine in northern Brazil. The Salobo mine is located at the Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest, in the state of Pará, Brazil, and operated by a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale (formerly Companhia Vale do Rio Doce). When comissioned in early 2010, the mine will have an estimated capacity of 100,000 tons of copper per year. Drive guide: Book introduces engineering concepts of motors and drives Motors and Drives: A Practical Technology Guide introduces engineering concepts of motors and drives in a way that can be easily understood by engineers unfamiliar with the technology, and to technicians who are technically literate but not accustomed to complex theory and mathematics. Big brake: Brake motors save energy Baldor Electric Company, a manufacturer of energy-saving industrial electric motors, drives, power transmission products and generators, announces three phase short series brake motors ready for immediate delivery from stock. The company says Short Series Brake Motors feature an integral Dodge spring set brake for a compact and cost effective design. Stepper motors: Keep motion smooth and fine Ametek says their new MAE brand "HN Series" hybrid stepper motors feature low detent-torque to holding-torque ratios, promoting smooth operation and fine positioning capability required for microstep operation.
