2008 ARC Awards entry rules

. All information on the entry form must be completed. An entry fee payment of $200 must accompany each entry, in addition to the supporting materials listed below. Official rules are listed below. Please follow these rules carefully. In fairness to all entrants, exceptions will not be permitted. Completed entries are due Aug. 29, 2008.

 

  1. Entry form: All entries must be submitted online using an official entry form. All information requested on the entry form must be provided, unless not applicable, in which case, write N/A. An incomplete form or a form providing misleading or false information will result in disqualification.

  2. Eligibility: Entries must meet all of the following criteria:

    1. Projects must have been completed with a statement of occupancy between Aug. 1, 2007, and July 31, 2008.

    2. An authorized representative of the engineering firm in charge of the building project must check the entry form verifying the building project’s occupancy date and the accuracy of the information provided.

    3. Entries must be submitted by or on behalf of the building project engineer or engineering firm.

    4. Building projects must be of appropriate project types: commercial, institutional, or industrial.

  3. Categories: The ARC Awards program recognizes firms and engineers winning or placing in two categories: Most Innovative New Construction Project and Most Innovative Rehab/Reconstruction Project. Gold, silver, and bronze awards will be given in each category.

  4. Project types: Project types do not have to be identified, but projects that will be considered are commercial, institutional, and industrial.

  5. Supporting materials: To be complete, each entry must contain the $200 entry fee, the online entry form, 2 printed copies of all color photos and other illustrations, CD of all color photos, and 2 copies of the project description. Entry fee, entry forms, photos, illustrations, CD, and project descriptions must be submitted as a single package. Materials submitted separately from the entry form will not be accepted. Entry fee, submitted photos, and other materials will not be returned.

  6. Photos or other illustrations: Each entry must include a CD containing high-resolution (300 DPI in TIFF, JPG or EPS) photos for magazine reproduction. All photos or other illustrations must be in color prints, if applicable. All photos or other illustrations must be printed 2 times each. Photos must include:

    1. Building’s exterior and interior

    2. Building’s M/E/P systems, HVAC systems, fire/life-safety systems, electrical systems, and other specifically engineered systems

    3. Drawings, illustrations, diagrams, spreadsheets, supporting documents, project schedules, etc.

    4. Each photo must be accompanied with a 50-word caption.

  7. Project description: Submit two project descriptions with the application. The entire (see below) project description should not exceed 2,500 words. Please describe the uniqueness of the design, results in energy efficiency, system integration, and inventive solutions to various project challenges with regard to the following, which should each be 250 words:

    1. Project as a whole

    2. Building controls and automation

    3. Electrical distribution

    4. Fire protection

    5. HVAC

    6. Lighting

    7. Motors and Drives

    8. Plumbing

    9. Power and power systems

  8. Entry deadline : Entries must reach Consulting-Specifying Engineer editorial offices by Aug. 29, 2008. Mail completed entries to Amara Rozgus, ARC Awards, Consulting-Specifying Engineer, 2000 Clearwater Dr., Oak Brook, IL, 60523. In fairness to those entrants who make efforts to meet this deadline, it cannot be extended.

  9. Judging : All judging will be supervised and coordinated by members of the Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine editorial staff. Their decisions are final. The judging panel will consist of members of the editorial advisory board, other engineers, industry experts, and CSE staff. Entries will be judged on the design of the buildings systems and other defining criteria that includes:

    1. The uniqueness of the building system

    2. State-of-the-art technologies

    3. Sustainability: energy efficiency, IAQ, water conservation, and comfort

    4. System and interdisciplinary integration and interaction

    5. Innovative solutions to various project challenges

    6. Challenges posted by architecture

Entrants may go online at www.csemag.com/arcawards and view the complete judging point system.

  1. Awards: Gold, silver, and bronze awards will be given in two categories: Most Innovative New Construction Project and Most Innovative Rehab/Reconstruction Project. Willing projects will be featured in Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s December 2008 issue and on the magazine’s Web site. Engineers and/or firms that submit winning projects will receive a plaque that is suitable for display in office headquarters, along with a congratulatory letter from the magazine’s chief editor. The letter may be used for issuing national press releases, posting on the winning project’s corporate Web site, and accompanying project RFQs.

  2. Entry fee: There is a $200 entry fee. Checks must be payable to Consulting-Specifying Engineer. Cash or purchase orders will not be accepted. The entry fee must accompany the supporting materials. Entry fees will not be refunded.

  3. Disqualification: Any entry that in the opinion of the judges or administrators that does not meet the letter or the spirit of this contest may be disqualified. The following specifically will be grounds for disqualification: Entries that do not comply with official rules, entries that are incomplete, entries with statement of occupancies outside of Aug. 1, 2007 and July 31, 2008, and entries that contain false information.
