As an associate and fire engineer with Arup, Alston is responsible for providing direction and oversight to the technical quality of the fire engineering business. He considers it essential to conduct his work based on sound, scientifically informed engineering principles and to help others do the same. For more than 10 years, he has applied fire and egress models in support of building design, fire litigation, and scientific research, specializing in the modeling of fires and related phenomena, in particular smoke, heat, and toxic species generation and transport. Alston has been extensively involved in the analysis, design, and review of emergency ventilation systems for a variety of projects around the world including transit station and tunnel, road tunnel, assembly, theater, high-rise, and transit overbuild mixed-use projects. His work has varied in scale from the very small—analyzing deficiencies of a fireplace in a Michelin Three-Star restaurant—to the very large—overseeing the conceptual design and analysis of emergency ventilation for a multibillion-dollar 16-station subway line. Alston is an active member of a number of fire and life safety committees that direct the industry and ultimately shape our built environment. In all of his activities he seeks to bring a fundamental and practical understanding of the latest technology and engineering tools used in fire engineering. Away from work he is an avid soccer player. Alston and his wife Liat recently had their first child, a leap-year baby boy.
