If I had known it was going to be this good, I would have started using machine vision years ago. This was one of many clarity-ridden, user-contributed comments for the machine vision “Product Research” article in this issue. We started asking those taking the survey to write in advice. Some comments are included in the article; others are linked online, posted with the April 24 Weekly News email newsletter.

Chrysler, losing staggering sums of money, may be cut loose from DaimlerChrysler, as the automaker is entertaining bids. The company also announced a $1.78 billion investment in Detroit-area manufacturing to increase efficiency. It makes me wonder why the automaker didn’t invest that money a few years ago to increase efficiency and make things better before it came to this. It’s like the people who fix up a house before selling, then look at it wistfully as they turn over the keys because they didn’t think it could look so good. United Autoworkers offered praise (thanks, perhaps) for the investment, and, according to some reports, unions may get some guarantees under some buyout terms under discussion.

20/20 hindsight : Perhaps focusing more on efficiency a few years earlier would have changed present discussions.

There’s nary a minute to finish the last project much less prepare for the next, and those taking the 2007 Control Engineering salary and career survey (in this issue) again listed staying current on technology trends among leading concerns. Make time learn and help move your organization ahead. Why? Because having zero options makes for wonderful clarity of purpose (said Henry Kissinger, as noted on the “Numbers” page in this issue.
