Alstom adopts Emerson’s Machinery Health Management program

Austin, TX—Emerson Process Management has announced a three-year collaboration agreement to provide Alstom's train servicing centers with Emerson's Machinery Health Management (MHM) technology, equipment, training and consulting.

Alstom offers rail products and services to rolling stock and infrastructure owners and operators worldwide. For example, it delivers Total TrainLife Management services, often as part of performance-based asset management contracts. In its 2002-03 fiscal year, Alstom had annual sales in excess of€20 billion, and employed approximately 100,000 people in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Emerson says its MHM systematically identifies critical equipment, and applies monitoring and diagnostic technologies to increase asset availability and reduce equipment failure. Alstom is committed to employing these tools and techniques to enhance the performance of its maintenance activities, and says it welcomes applying Emerson’s multi-technology platform. Alstom will initially use vibration, stresswave and ultrasonic condition-based maintenance equipment and techniques in its maintenance programs.

'Alstom is very pleased to add Emerson’s static vibration analysis equipment to our condition monitoring 'toolbox' capabilities,' says Ian Ferguson, market development director for Alstom’s Transport Services division. 'It further demonstrates our commitment to employing leading edge technology in our maintenance processes. Static vibration analysis is being used to monitor rotating equipment, such as gearboxes. Once application refinements underway in the U.K. are completed, the technology will be rolled out to other contracts where it will help engineers to extend the periodicity of maintenance and to predict component failure.'

Dave Dunbar, president of Emerson’s MHM business, adds that, 'We look forward to working with Alstom, and applying MHM techniques to identify improved maintenance practices that will increase rolling stock reliability, and minimize time spent on inspection and monitoring. Our team will apply core skills in rail industry asset monitoring, and collaborate with Alstom to customize specific tasks, and then roll out the expertise and equipment solutions across all relevant Alstom centers.'

Emerson will coordinate the European consultancy and equipment requirements from its Liverpool, UK-based office, which is supported by its broader network of European offices and consultants on machinery health management. Emerson adds that MHM is a comprehensive strategy that helps businesses reduce mechanical maintenance costs through work process design, technology implementation, and expertise optimization. MHM supports equipment monitoring, data management, data analysis, and effective reporting of results for machinery health management programs.
