Alstom launches new Alspa Series 6 control system offering

Platform designed for power plant automation covers the full plant-wide operational range.

Alstom Power has launched Alspa Series 6, a new suite of power plant control and automation tools that use the latest technology for power plant operation, either specific areas such as turbines, or through the whole power station.

Alstom says that Alspa Series 6 draws on its extensive experience in power plant control, integrating the latest technologies for operation, management, maintenance, and safety functions for thermal, hydroelectric, and nuclear installations. A central component is Alspa ControlPlant, Alstom’s plant automation system using modular and open real-time Ethernet Power Link-based architecture.

The system follows the trend of centralizing more information, moving away from the distributed management used a few years ago. The change is supported by newer technologies that can manage large quantities of information quickly and safely, using reliable and low-cost communication networks.

Alspa Series 6 uses Microsoft.Net technology for HMIs, producing an ergonomically friendly and easy-to-use system. The control room can be configured according to the specific architectures needed for various processes, including hydro, combined cycle, and supercritical thermal projects.

Control functions, such as historical data analysis, remote maintenance diagnostics, and remote power plant supervision can be accessed securely through the internet. Automation cells, including machine controllers, distributed controllers, and input/output devices that report information back to the control system are now more powerful, allowing for more complex operations.

Alstom has divided the more specialized plant functions into specific modules:

  • OptiPlant for asset management and scheduling;

  • ControFlame for boiler protection and management;

  • ControGas for gas turbine automation and control; and

  • ControSteam for steam turbine automation and control.
