Fremont, CAArista Corp ., an industrial PC solutions provider and system integrator, announced October 1 it has chosen to adopt the ETX (Embedded Technology eXtended) standard as the basis for their new embedded solution. The ETX815 and ETX863 represent the latest applications of the ETX standard and are now available through Arista Corporation.

ETX modules share a standardized form factor and connector layout designed to carry a specific set of signals to the system. These modules are extremely compact providing designers the ability to develop a single system embedded board, which will accommodate a wide variety of existing ETX modules, and provide an open growth path for new solutions as the standard evolves. The modules are used in the same manner that a developer might use an integrated circuit board and utilizes ETX technology. ETX technology was developed to provide high-performance computing, reduce cost of manufacturing and provide developers with the ability to manufacture computers quickly.

‘ETX modules simplify building of low-cost and high-performance embedded solutions,’ said Stewart Austin, director of sales for Arista. ‘Developers can shorten product development for custom designs considerably without eliminating valuable features needed to run today’s low power applications.’

The ETX815 processor module uses Intel 815E chipset supporting Intel Mobile Pentium and Celeron processors (400/500/700 MHz), running up to 133 MHz bus speeds. The module’s VGA function supports the internal AGP VGA of the 815E chipset or the SMI 721 chipset prevalently used in today’s notebook computers. The SMI VGA controller uses less power and features LVDS LCD panel as well as CRT display support. In addition to the standard ETX features, the ETX815 supports USB, contains a built-in Intel 82801 Ethernet connection, keyboard, mouse, and communication ports.

The ETX863 module is based on the VIA ProSavage chipset featuring built-in high-performance 2D/3D graphics, flexible bus settings and support for 100/133 SDRAM. Available in versions of 400MHz, 533MHz and 667MHz, the ETX863 supports VIA Eden and C3 processors. In addition, the ETX863i is available with an Intel Pentium II processor. Measuring 95mm by 114mm the ETX contains support for 4 USB ports, one parallel port and a Realtek 10/100 Base-T Ethernet controller as well as keyboard and mouse ports.

Pricing for the ETX815 and ETX863 ranges from $400 depending on the processor’s speed.
