ASHRAE Pubs Address Fuel Cells, Managing Smoke

Among the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' latest offerings are publications on principles in smoke management and fuel cells for building applications.

Among the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' latest offerings are publications on principles in smoke management and fuel cells for building applications.

The fire-protection book, co-authored by industry expert John Klote, discusses recent advancements in a number of technical areas such as heat release rate, smoke toxicity, natural atrium venting, smoke stratification and detection. The publication also covers pressurized stairwells, pressurized elevators, zoned smoke control and smoke management in atria and other large spaces.

On the topic of fuel cells, ASHRAE's new guide provides designers with information to help identify fuel cell applications that will bring economic and environmental benefits.

"Fuel cell systems offer modularity and high efficiency across a range of local conditions, minimum environmental impact and opportunities for integration into cogeneration systems," says author Steve Ellis.

Specifically, the book goes into fuel cell technology, performance and operating conditions, construction materials, system integration issues and demonstration and commercialization projects.
