Warsaw, Poland— The control engineering profession helps manufacturing by applying advanced technology to the long-known, basic control loop of sense/measure-decide-actuate, says Mark T. Hoske, Control Engineering ’s editor-in-chief, who spoke April 6 to a second-day audience at the Automaticon 2005 show and conference.

Hoske also covered several popular topics in recent articles in Control Engineering articles, including “10 Design Tips for Machine Control” and a round up of recent Ethernet developments, including how industrial Ethernet-related protocols are changing manufacturing. Launched in 2003, Control Engineering Polska magazine invited Hoske to speak at the exhibition and conference.

“People working in control engineering today are using advanced technologies to preserve and optimize assets, speed set-up and start-ups, help manufacturing get the most for its money, and, ultimately, save jobs,” Hoske reports. “Automation vendors are finding ways, through easier-to-use technologies and more comprehensive, flexible services, to help users to do it.”

Connections with other enterprise areas, supply chain, maintenance, safety, and IT continue to make controls and automation more visible and valued within organizations, he adds, by using smart sensors, easier logic, intelligent actuation, software, and more open networking options, such as industrial Ethernet. All of this augments the increasing growth and renovation underway in Poland and other “Eastern European” countries integrating with the European Union.
