Connectivity: Embedded LAN module with minimum programming

San Jose, CAConnect One released an embedded LAN module called Nano LANReach, which the company says quickly and easily connects any embedded device to 10/100BaseT LANs with minimal programming. Measuring 2.5 x 3.5 cm including a built-in RJ45 connector, the module has firmware with functionality that the company says makes it an affordable and versatile LAN solution for embedded devices.

As part of the Nano Reach product family, the module uses the same pin-out as the company’s Nano WiReach WiFi module. This is said to enhance flexibility for customer production planning, allowing for a single PCB design, which supports either LAN or WiFi connectivity, depending on the module added during assembly.
The company says the module’s firmware supports several modes of operation:
Serial-to-LAN bridge — enabling transparent bridging of serial data over LAN using the module’s high-speed UART. The module supports TCP, UDP or SSL tunneling of serial data.
Full Internet controller mode — allowing simple microcontrollers to use the Nano LANReach’s rich protocol and application capabilities to perform complex Internet operations, such as e-mail, FTP, SSL, embedded web server and others. Internet controller mode can be used with any hardware interface.
It also offers a Internet security features, including the latest Internet SSL encryption algorithms. In addition, it is said to serve as an inherent firewall, protecting the embedded application from attacks originating from the Internet. The module operates at an industrial temperature range of -40 ° to 85 °C (-40 ° to 185 °F) and is RoHS-compliant.
The company says Nano LANReach is immediately available starting at $38. A $160 II-EVB-363ML evaluation board is also available, which the company says provides an easy environment for developing and testing applications for the module.
