Consortium approves EBX specification revisions

By Control Engineering Staff September 13, 2005

San Francisco, CAPC/104 Consortium has approved a number of changes to the EBX specification. The standard was introduced in 1997 as a larger form factor that provides ample space for larger CPU chips and chipsets and expanded connector space. The Consortium assumed the role of governing standards body for the EBX specification in March 2004. Its technical committee reviewed the specification and recommended a number of changes intended to facilitate the transfer and increase the functionality of the board.

Changes made by the Consortium include removal of company-specific information, addition of references to the PC/104 Embedded Consortium, update of address information for the PC/104 Embedded Consortium, correction of section numbering, removal of reference to IEEE P996 specification, and update of contract information for reference documents. The Consortium also removed reference to recommended power connector and increased area for the power connector.

More than 25 companies manufacture EBX embedded board products and more than 90 manufacturers provide PC/104 CPU and I/O boards that plug into the PC/104 and PC/104-Plus connectors on EBX boards. The PC/104 Consortium and standard were established in 1992. In use since 1987, PC/104 is a small form factor, embedded PC physical and electrical interface standard. It reportedly gives embedded system designers an architecture that is dense, cost effective, and based on proven, practical technology. PC/104-Plus, an extension that was added to the standard in 1995, incorporates PCI (peripheral component interconnect) technology. A PCI-only version, PCI-104 was incorporated into the specification in 2004.
