Engineering challenges

Working in a campus environment where adjacent structures need to remain operational and be connected to the new building while construction takes place. This poses special challenges from a utility standpoint as well as a LEED standpoint.

Solutions

To meet the U.S. Green Building Council LEED requirements as well as Cornell's energy targets, a very aggressive approach to energy efficiency was taken. A number of strategies were incorporated, which included heat recovery on all the air systems, heat recovery on the water cooled condensing units to aid in the heating of outside air for laboratories, an aggressive demand control ventilation strategy that was utilized in the lab spaces, as well as utilizing relief air to assist with the ventilation of lab spaces and the 250-car parking garage.
