Following recent gains in market share for its PLCs in Europe, America, and Asia, Siemens currently accounts for 28% of the DM 8 billion world market, according to Hubert Ovenhausen, director of Siemens' Industrial Automation Systems Division. "We attribute our additional profits to the success of the Totally Integrated Automation system introduced last year, which is essentially based on Simatic S7. Particularly worthy of notice is the business with new customers," says Mr. Ovenhausen, who projected that Siemens will have a 30% market share by 2000. He added that the world market for industrial PCs, which was about DM 2 billion in 1996, is showing double digit growth. Siemens has a 14% share of this market and is "easily the world's top supplier," having sold 180,000 units last year. "It is worth mentioning that the market for industrial PCs is dominated by those manufacturers who have experience in industrial automation," he said. "Last year, we completely renovated our Simatic PC by introducing two new product lines geared to the needs of industry."
