Cyber security: New testing lab certifies control platforms
Wurldtech Labs, an independent division of Wurldtech Security Technologies , has announced the results of its initial round of Achilles Certification Testing. This third-party testing is intended to provide objective analysis of a product’s ability to withstand cyber attacks.
The following six products earned The Achilles Level 1 Certification:
CENTIUM CS 3000 R3 Field Control Unit– Yokogawa Electric Corporation ;
CENTIUM CS 3000 R3 Vnet Router– Yokogawa Electric Corporation ;
DeltaV Controller– Emerson Process Management ;
ProSafe-RS Vnet/IP Safety Control Unit– Yokogawa Electric Corporation ;
Tricon Safety Controller– Invensys Process Systems– Triconex ;
Trusted Safety Controller– ICS Triplex (now part of Rockwell Automation).
In conjunction with the completion of the initial round of the industrial controller certifications, Wurldtech Labs publicly released the current version of Level 1 of the Achilles Certification Testing Criteria. Industrial controller products must meet every requirement in the criteria document in order to attain the Achilles certification mark. The Level 1 criteria document and the certification results for the six certified products are available for review online.
The Achilles certification program was developed to provide a benchmark for certification of secure industrial controllers, designing a procedure to assess their overall security capabilities. Level 1 certification focuses on layers 2 to 4 and the implementation of common protocols, such as Ethernet, ARP, IP, ICMP, and UPD.
Wurldtech Security Technologies, headquartered in Vancouver, BC, Canada, is a provider of security solutions to SCADA, process control and mission-critical industries. The company was founded in 2006 as an outgrowth of cyber security research done at the British Columbia Institute of Techonolgy (BCIT). Wurldtech provides products and services that help protect global critical infrastructure and address the security needs of companies and government agencies worldwide.
“Wurldtech Labs’ Achilles Certification testing is the most comprehensive, real-world security testing of its kind,” notes Ernest Rakaczky, Director of Control System Security at Invensys Systems Canada Inc. “There is no doubt that Wurldtech has succeeded in providing an exceptional source of meaningful and independent security assurance for the industrial control system community. Achieving the Achilles certification is a compelling testament to our commitment to ensuring quality and security in our industrial automation products.”
“Automation engineers can have a higher degree of comfort knowing that DeltaV controllers have passed an accepted set of test suites and test parameters,” says Bob Huba, senior product manager for Emerson Process Management. “Controllers with Level 1 certification have demonstrated the robustness to survive network cyber attacks.”
