The FDT/DTM concept simplifies communication between instruments and larger plant control systems.

MTL Open Systems Technologies has released its new generic communications device type manager (DTM) which will reportedly enable their MTL4840 HART connection system, MTL8000 Process I/O, and MOST controllers to pass HART data to any instrument maintenance software (IMS) packages using the FDT/DTM concept.

Designed for maintenance engineers who want to use on-line HART data, the DTM software uses the latest FDT (field device tool) Group specification v1.2. Users running the IMS package on a PC can download the software free.

The FDT/DTM concept was developed by the FDT Group with members from many leading companies in the process automation industry. Their open standard is intended to simplify communications between all instruments, devices, calibrators, asset management software, and DCS systems. According to the standard, all instrument and device manufacturers develop DTM software describing their devices, containing all the device’s norms and graphic user dialogues. The DTM undertakes device configuration and provides device documentation. FDT is the container application in which DTM runs.
