Motion Control - Motors: The Festo H-gantry EXCM is a company planar surface gantry with rectangular working space offering extensive functionality with a highly compact design. This is a Control Engineering 2014 Engineers’ Choice finalist.Precise and fast positioning in cramped installation conditions: The Festo H-gantry EXCM makes this possible in a simple way. This reliable system solution can be supplied by Festo, the manufacturer of electrical and pneumatic automatic control technology, directly for installation on machines and plants in electronics production or small parts assembly and for use in laboratory automation.

The H-gantry EXCM is a compact planar surface gantry which can approach any position within its working space. The recirculating toothed belt moves the slide within a two-dimensional area (X and Y axes). The fixed motors are connected to the slide and thanks to the parallel-kinematic drive principle the moving masses remain low.

Fast positioning

This ready-to-install system allows fast positioning at speeds of up to 500 mm/s and repetition accuracies of ±0.05 mm. This makes the compact H-gantry ideal for applications in electronics production and small parts assembly. These applications include the feeding and screwing in of small components, setting adhesive points, electronics testing such as contact points or resistance, the flexible positioning of workpieces and components in assembly operations, palletization and depalletization, desktop manufacturing and assembly.

Quick commissioning

The gantry requires very little commissioning and can be integrated quickly into machines. The pre-parameterized drive and controller package gives users the security of knowing that they can concentrate on their own core competences without having to concern themselves with the details of automation technology. Festo is thus able to save users a great deal of additional work. The flexible interface concept provides users with a choice of Ethernet, CANopen and I/Os for up to 64 positions. Supplied fully assembled and tested, these ready-to-install systems can be delivered directly to the machines and plants.
