EC: MGate W5208 industrial Ethernet gateway

Network Integration - Network hardware: Moxa's MGate W5208 is the first industrial Ethernet gateway to combine serial, Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP, DNP3, and Ethernet communication over 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi networks. This is a Control Engineering 2016 Engineers’ Choice Awards Winner.

As the industrial sector looks to connect more and more Modbus devices to the network and the Internet, the demand has grown for easily deployed solutions that can meet the needs of multiple scenarios. In particular, many industrial users are looking to wireless connectivity to help them reduce the cost of wiring and/or allow easy device portability.

The MGate W5208 greatly simplifies the connection of Modbus and other devices with a one-of-a-kind combination of built-in communication capabilities. It combines an 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi client with a fully featured Modbus RTU/ASCII to Modbus TCP gateway. With a single MGate W5208, engineers can easily establish network communication with Modbus RTU/ASCII devices over Wi-Fi, minimizing the use of additional wiring, space, and power. This is an easy, scalable way to allow the thousands of existing devices on plant floors and in the field to share data over a larger network and the Internet, a key requirement for Industrial Internet of Things applications.

To provide even greater flexibility to engineers, the MGate W5208’s two RS-232/422/485 ports also support DNP3 and general serial communication. It also features an Ethernet port and I/O connections to provide wireless bridging to other nearby devices. Users can now connect multiple devices within a control panel to Wi-Fi, including Ethernet-based PLCs and controllers, Modbus RTU-based instrumentation and I/O, as well as general purpose RS-232/422/485 serial devices.

The MGate W5208 includes industry-leading functions to simplify configuration and maximize communication performance and flexibility, leveraging Moxa’s 27 years of experience with industrial connectivity, networking, wireless communication, and protocol handling. It provides engineers with a simple and flexible solution for connecting industrial devices over Wi-Fi, where previously they would have required multiple devices and custom development. Immediate applications include oil and gas, solar manufacturing, solar, water/wastewater, power/utility, and more.
