EC: NI CompactRIO 9082 system controller

Machine and embedded control – PACs: The NI cRIO-9082 system delivers the highest processing power of any CompactRIO product and is ideal for performing complex signal processing and control within applications such as rapid control prototyping, advanced motion control, and machine vision. This is a Control Engineering 2012 Engineers’ Choice honorable mention.

November 18, 2011

The new NI cRIO-9082 system features an Intel Core i7 dual-core processor for increased processing power, Xilinx Spartan-6 field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and built-in VGA display output for an integrated user interface. Additionally, for the first time on the CompactRIO platform, engineers have the option of using Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7) OS configuration for monitoring and control applications that require an integrated HMI and the ruggedness of CompactRIO. With the Intel Core i7 dual-core 1.33 GHz processor and Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150 FPGA, the cRIO-9082 delivers the highest processing power of any CompactRIO product. The new CompactRIO is ideal for performing complex signal processing and control within applications such as advanced motion control and machine vision, as well as rapid control prototyping for control systems within industries such as renewable energy and automotive. NI LabVIEW graphical system design software can be used to program the high-performance multicore processor and the reconfigurable Xilinx FPGA embedded with the cRIO-9082 systems, allowing for fast prototyping and deployment of these CompactRIO systems. The controller can be configured with a WES7 OS, which gives engineers access to a broad ecosystem of Windows-based software and integrated graphics, or a real-time OS for reliable, deterministic performance.

The system provides a variety of high-performance peripheral connectivity including two Gigabit Ethernet ports, a MXI Express port for C Series expansion, four Hi-Speed USB ports, RS232 and RS485 serial ports, and a new CPU expansion Module (CXM). This functionality makes it possible to add a wide range of NI and third-party CXM modules to take advantage of I/O such as Wi-Fi, high-speed removable storage, and ExpressCard.
