This is a Control Engineering 2014 Engineers’ Choice honorable mention.The new NI cRIO-9068 software-designed controller features a brand new design for embedded control and monitoring applications. While the controller is completely redesigned, it maintains full NI LabVIEW and I/O compatibility with the CompactRIO platform. It also integrates powerful technologies such as the Xilinx Zynq-7020 all programmable system on a chip (SoC), which combines a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor and Xilinx 7 Series FPGA fabric.

Faced with shorter development cycles and smaller teams, embedded design and industrial control engineers are challenged with innovating, designing, and deploying systems faster and more efficiently while reducing cost and risk. Based on the LabVIEW reconfigurable I/O (RIO) architecture, the cRIO-9068 controller helps engineers meet any demanding embedded control and monitoring task without wasting valuable development time and cost. New features include performance gains four times faster than previous generations, an extended operating temperature range of -40 to 70 C, and a Linux-based, real-time OS that provides greater flexibility for both LabVIEW Real-Time and C/C++ application developers. Additionally, with the new cRIO-9068 controller users can benefit from a consistent LabVIEW programming experience that ensures both new and existing designs take full advantage of updated technology with minimal effort. This new controller, programmed with LabVIEW system design software, enables engineers and scientists to use a single, graphical development environment to take advantage of the improved hardware performance.

With LabVIEW 2013 support for the NI Linux Real-Time OS, developers receive access to a robust set of community-sourced libraries and applications to augment their control and monitoring systems. Additionally, LabVIEW 2013 offers expanded connectivity options including improved web service creation and secure, industry-standard WebDAV browser-based file management.
