This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee.Opto 22's Opto Sensor is an energy monitoring and data acquisition appliance that lets commercial and industrial customers acquire power consumption data from facility systems, machines, equipment, and metering devices in real time and with minimal configuration. The Sensor also provides the interfaces needed to quickly and easily view and share this data over standard wired and wireless networks and the internet so it can be archived, presented, analyzed, and used to develop effective energy management strategies that reduce costs.

The current economic climate has forced businesses to explore energy efficiency and conservation as a way to improve the bottom line. The OptoEMU Sensor was designed for plant managers, business owners, energy consultants, maintenance engineers, and others looking for ways to reduce their energy consumption. Businesses' energy monitoring needs are often addressed in a piecemeal fashion that is largely disconnected from business systems. As a unique alternative to this, the OptoEMU Sensor serves as a simple, out-of-the-box appliance that reduces the steps needed to acquire and view energy use. The Sensor employs standard IP-based wired or wireless communications interfaces and open, published data formats to deliver energy data to standard SQL databases, third party applications like Google PowerMeter and Pulse Energy's Pulse or Opto 22's free PAC Project software.

The OptoEMU Sensor's multi-port, multi-input features allow it to connect to individual load panels and subpanels, accept pulsed inputs from building utility meters and sub-meters, and support standard Ethernet and serial communications to existing energy management systems via Modbus and BACnet. And because the OptoEMU Sensor is based on the same technology as Opto 22's standard Snap PAC System, customers are able to easily deploy additional sensors at any time, or even expand their capabilities to gain equipment management and control functions simply by adding a few additional components.
