EC: Remote Universal Safety I/O

Safety: Honeywell Process Solutions Remote Universal Safety I/O. Safety Manager Remote I/O is a module for Honeywell's Safety Manager platform that allows process manufacturers to integrate safety devices while simplifying installation and maintenance. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee.

Companies that operate in harsh environments need a platform that is flexible enough to keep up with their evolving safety needs and challenges. Honeywell introduced a remote universal safety input/output (I/O) module for its Safety Manager platform that allows process manufacturers to integrate more safety devices and simplify installation and maintenance. The module is ideal for facilities that must integrate equipment, units and other assets that are spread over wide geographic distances and comply with changing industry safety regulations. Plants and refineries use Safety Manager to safeguard their assets and to share critical safety information with process control systems. This system helps them prevent and mitigate safety incidents by protecting equipment, monitoring for fire and gas leaks, and maintaining critical control functions. The new remote universal safety I/O module helps facilities expand the Safety Manager solution and still allow multiple remote locations to be controlled out of one centralized unit. Typical I/O modules are wired to control rooms through junction boxes and marshalling cabinets. By using soft-marshalling, the Remote Universal Safety I/O module can be mounted close to the process unit, eliminating the need for marshalling panels or homerun cables, and reducing or even eliminating field auxiliary rooms. This lowers overall capital expenditure, engineering cost as well as maintenance costs. Each channel of the universal, high-density module can also individually be configured to a different I/O type, which provides manufacturers more flexibility to design safety solutions that are uniquely suited to their needs. Keeping ruggedness and an increasing focus on safety in mind, the remote universal safety I/O module is SIL-3 (Safety Integrity Level) certified and is designed for harsh environments often found with offshore oil and gas operations with production platforms located in extreme-climate regions.
