EC: Rosemount 3051S Electronic Remote Sensor System

Process control – Process sensors: The Rosemount 3051S Electronic Remote Sensor System from Emerson Process Management improves performance, is easier to install, and provides greater process insight on tall vessels and distillation towers through a patented digital architecture that allows mechanical impulse piping or long lengths of capillary to be replaced with standard cabling. This is a Control Engineering 2012 Engineers’ Choice award winner.

November 18, 2011

The Rosemount 3051S Electronic Remote Sensor system, released in January 2011, is the industry’s first digital architecture for DP level and differential pressure applications, according to  Emerson Process Management. With over 10 patents, the 3051S ERS System is a breakthrough technology that allows mechanical impulse piping to be replaced with standard cabling. Two 3051S sensors are wired together and differential pressure is calculated in one of the two devices. All variables measured and calculated by the system are transmitted using one two-wire 4 mA to 20 mA HART loop.

The unique digital architecture of Electronic Remote Sensor technology eliminates temperature-induced measurement drift, improves time response, facilitates easier installations, and provides greater process insight with MultiVariable capabilities.

Electronic Remote Sensor technology is ideal for applications that have experienced performance or maintenance issues with mechanical connections. For example, a Solvay facility retrofitted a 3051S ERS System on a tank, eliminated measurement drift, and plugged impulse lines. On a different application, a refinery replaced an installation with excessive impulse piping on a 25-ft distillation tower. The 3051S ERS System enabled accurate monitoring of the health of the packing, eliminating manual trips to the field to verify tower operation.

Electronic Remote Sensor technology enables a wealth of improvements over traditional installations:

  • Improved performance: Over 90% reduction in time response and elimination of measurement drift.
  • Simplified installations: Electrical wire between sensors can easily be installed through floor grates and around hazards without the need for heat tracing or purge systems.
  • Simplified maintenance routines: Each sensor can be independently serviced and replaced for reduced process downtime.
  • Gain greater process insight: In addition to the DP measurement, the pressure from each sensor can be monitored for real-time verification of process conditions at the top and bottom of a tower or vessel.
