The SLC440 series Type 4 Safety Light Curtain has innovative features that include a seamless one-piece body for superior mechanical strength, integrated alignment aid, visible output status indication and a 7 segment message display. This is a Control Engineering 2013 Engineers' Choice finalist.The Schmersal SLC440 Series of Safety Light curtains were designed with the user in mind by reducing installation time and minimizing costly machine downtime. Standard features on the SLC440 include: fixed and floating blanking, blanking with movable edge, double reset, contactor control (EDM), beam coding, automatic mode and re-start interlock mode. These functions are selected and configured during set up without a PC or software.

Other time saving features include an integrated alignment aid, which guides the user to ensure proper light curtain alignment. If misaligned the 7 segment display tells the user which portion of the light curtain requires alignment. Once the emitter and receiver are situated properly, the display can be changed over to show signal strength, to fine tune the alignment. To help operators and maintenance personnel, the SLC440 includes a highly visible LED signal lamp in the receiver end cap. This LED displays the light curtain output status indicating when the OSSD output is high (on) or when it is low (off). As well, the 7 segment display found on the light curtain receiver displays error codes to help the user identify specific faults.

The Schmersal SLC440 is built to survive the rigors of everyday real life industrial applications. Unlike most other safety light curtains, the SLC440 features a one-piece extruded housing, in a compact 28 mm x 33 mm rectangular profile. This reinforced housing profile provides maximum strength and is less susceptible to mechanical damage and misalignment from torsion or bending. SLC 440 Safety light curtains are used for the protection of hazardous areas, and are available with resolutions of 14 mm or 30 mm and protection field heights between 170 mm and 1770 mm. These type 4 light curtains are suited for use in safety circuits up to PLe (EN 13849) or SIL3 (IEC 61508).
