Efficient ac motor control

El Segundo, Calif. – New process technology for IGBTs (insulated-gate bipolar transistors) and FREDs (fast recovery epitaxial diodes) promises increased useful speed range for ac motors. These power-switching devices-used in welders and uninterruptible power supplies, as well-can now deliver 70% faster turn-off time (0.3sampling. The devices provide power levels up to 7.5 hp for bridge-type inverters of 400-480 V ac input.
