Embedded computing: PICMG COM Express Subcommittee works on design guide

Kontron has reported that a number of companies have come together to create COM Express Base Board Design Guide, a joint effort to ensure optimal interchangeability of COM Express based Computer-On-Modules. PICMG COM Express Subcommittee members are working on the publication, scheduled at Embedded World 2008 in Nuremberg, Germany, Feb. 26-28, 2008.<br/>

Adlink's Jeff Munch will chair the subcommittee; its work is being followed by Dick Somes and Joe Pavlatt of PICMG. Stefan Milnor from Kontron will be one of the two draft editors to compile COM Express Base Board Design Guide. Milnor has served as draft editor of the COM Express Specification and has years of experience in COM Express technology. Christian Eder from Congatec is the second editor.

This first draft will be based on COM Express Extension's Design Guide, brought to subcommittee by COM Industrial Group, Kontron explains. It incorporates Computer-On-Module-related as well as baseboard-related design roles. Due to similarity to baseboard-related design roles, the PnP Design Guide from Congatec also will be incorporated into the first draft. The subcommittee will standardize the guides and add requirements as proposed by the rest of its members.

This is the first step to transform the COM Industrial Group's effort into the PICMG Standard, Kontron noted. The COM Express Extension contains the Base Board Design Guide as a key feature, along with definitions for the standardization of Computer-On-Modules and base board designs. All new COM-IG members who support COM Express Extension consider this an essential proactive move by the new COM-IG to ensure that COM Express solutions continue to be interchangeable, no matter which vendor provides them.
