Engineering school's building green in theory and practice

The University at Buffalo's new engineering building will earn LEED gold and educate the engineers of the future.


The State University of New York at Buffalo will complete a $61 million engineering building in 2011, according to the Buffalo News . The 130,000 sq ft facility will not only teach its students sustainable practices, but is also slated to earn U.S. Green Building Council LEED gold.

Features that will make the building LEED gold-worthy include sensors to dim or brighten lights depending the natural light in a room, rain gardens and a green roof to absorb stormwater, toilets that use less water, and a highly reflective roof to reduce heat absorbed into the building.

The building will also feature a "clean room" for developing microtechnologies in a dust- and particle-free environment, and a wireless communications room for radio frequency research.

This green building will house the electrical engineering and computer science engineering programs, and replace several trailers that currently house the overflow of students in the engineering program. Since engineers are in high demand in the job market today, this is an opportune time to assure that engineers have the proper training and education.
