SCM5B48 isolated accelerometer input module from Dataforth Corp. provides excitation to piezoelectric sensors with built-in microelectronic amplifiers known as ICP or IEPE sensors. Module provides a constant current excitation to the sensor, then isolates, filters, and amplifies sensor output to yield a high-level, analog voltage output. Excitation current, signal gain, and filter high-pass and low-pass cutoff frequencies are field configurable through a set of slide switches.
Applications include aircraft and aerospace, automotive, environmental strength of materials, and any process requiring precise acceleration measurement. Six poles of signal filtering result in greater than 100 dB of normal-mode rejection for signal frequencies above cutoff. Device offers the option of setting the constant current source for sensor excitation to common values of 4 or 9 mA with a compliance voltage of 24 V dc. Module signal inputs and sensor excitation outputs are protected against accidental connection of voltages up to 240 V rms. A high-performance isolation barrier breaks ground loops, allows operation at high common-mode input voltages, and rejects large common-mode spikes to preserve signal integrity yet maintain accuracy and low-output noise.
Compact device measures 2.28 x 2.26 x 0.6 in. (58 x 57 x 15 mm) and is housed in a potted thermoplastic plug-in-the-panel package with flammability rating of UL-84 V0. All models offer dimensional stability over temperature, chemical resistance, and electrical stability over time and temperature. Operation and storage temperature range is -40 to 85 °C. Models meet the requirements of EN61000-6-4 (radiated/conducted emissions) and EN61000-6-2 (ESD/RF/EFT immunity). North American Class I, Div. 2 and European Group II, Category 3 approvals for operation in hazardous environments are pending.
