Exclusive: Nano controller programmable with Bluetooth wireless, Ethernet

Telemecanique Twido nano controller is billed by its manufacturer, Schneider Electric , as the first nano PLC with embedded Ethernet capability that can be programmed with either Bluetooth wireless or Ethernet.

Latest enhancements to the company’s Twido platform extend functionality and ease of use in a range of applications. New capabilities for the controllers are part of the company’s comprehensive revitalization of its PLCs, which includes the introduction of next-generation Modicon Quantum and Premium PLCs with, according to Schneider Electric, the industry’s fastest processing speeds.


New wireless capabilities built into the controllers simplify diagnostics and troubleshooting for OEMs and plant personnel. Users can remotely monitor and control the PLCs over Ethernet using the new processor with an embedded Ethernet connection or by using a new Modbus-to-Ethernet bridge.

Bluetooth wireless capability for the line also simplifies set-up and adjustment. The Bluetooth gateway allows wire-free connection to the controller up to a distance of 30 ft through a laptop using TwidoSoft programming software or with the TwidoAdjust tool for pocket PCs. It can also be used for adjusting parameters on the new Telemecanique Altivar 31 compact drives.

Enhanced TwidoSoft v3.0 software incorporates online programming capabilities. Updated software simplifies controller programming so that users may modify program instructions in Instruction List or Ladder Logic while the controller is in a run mode. Software may be downloaded free from the Telemecanique Web site .

Other features in the platform include four high-density analog I/O expansion modules, said to provide cost-effective options for measurement and regulation. Enhanced processor capabilities include 40 I/O compact controllers with an embedded real-time clock and a compartment for a replaceable external back-up battery.

Ultra-compact PLCs are intended to be simple to assemble, cable, and integrate. Compact footprint takes a minimum of panel space without sacrificing functionality, response time, or reliability. Controller flexibility makes custom automation solutions more affordable for machine builders. Modular, off-the-shelf product may be scaled to individual machine requirements for I/O, wiring, power supply, display size, processing power, and communications, reducing design time.

Open PLC works in synergy with other ultra-compact Telemecanique control products, including drives, combination starters, HMI, power supplies, and pre-wired connectors. Product line provides an integrated control solution that is simple to customize, configure, and install to speed time to market for makers of small machines.
