Lurgi Metallurgie GmbH, a metallurgical company, is the first German firm to adopt Fisher-Rosemount's PlantWeb architecture using FOUNDATION Fieldbus. It will be used to automate and control a new test and demonstration plant for advanced direct reduction processes. Respectively named Circored and Circofer, Lurgi's advanced processes are based on the technology of circulating vortex layers. These are used to turn out five tons of iron sponge daily from the new pilot plant, under conditions close to those of the actual production process. The raw material employed is refined iron ores that may be immediately processed in the form received, without need for elaborate agglomeration stages. The benefits to buyers are expected to be the low manufacturing costs and the low capital investments required.
