Flowmeter for filling machines with high precision

New Micro Motion filling transmitter offers Coriolis technology for accurate mass readings.

March 7, 2011

Emerson Process Management has announced a new Micro Motion Filling Mass Transmitter, designed for any process that requires high-speed, high-accuracy filling or dosing. Using its MVD (multivariable digital) technology, Emerson says the Micro Motion Coriolis sensor is well suited for a variety of linear and rotary filling machines across the life sciences, food and beverage, and chemical industries. The unit can handle extremely fast fills (less than one second) and challenging fluids such as those with entrained air, suspended solids, or high viscosity. Integrated valve control reduces external processing and increases accuracy.

Following a trial of Micro Motion meters, Mike Mihalik, VP of engineering at Pneumatic Scale Angelus, said, “The results with Micro Motion Coriolis filling meters showed higher efficiency by improved reliability – 10,000 containers per shift vs. 8,000 with older, less reliable filling technology.”

The Filling Mass Transmitter, like other Micro Motion Coriolis meters, delivers mass, density, and temperature process data in one device, supporting continuous monitoring of product quality with a complete real-time view of fluid characteristics. Digital communications provide continuous monitoring of density and temperature for real-time quality control, and enable changes on the fly to fill target or recipe.

The automatic overshoot compensation (AOC) feature automatically adjusts valve management to compensate for changes in process conditions such as delivery pressure and fluid characteristics, delivering accuracy and reliability with minimal setup and maintenance. With direct mass measurement and high stability (turndown), the Filling Mass Transmitter is suitable for filling a variety of container sizes and products with a single sensor

The unit is compact and light, minimizing space requirements and reducing installation cost and effort. Easy to integrate into almost any filling machine, the slim profile and compact dimensions reduce the footprint and allow for the maximum number of fill heads. The Filling Mass Transmitter is compatible with the Micro Motion F-Series and H-Series ranges of Coriolis sensors, and also with the Elite sensor for very small fills. Simply select the sensor size and surface finish, and choose Modbus or Profibus-DP digital communications, integrated valve control for speed and reliability, or a frequency/pulse output for traditional pulse-counting applications.

The filling meter has no moving parts, the electronics are immune to temperature shocks from CIP/SIP procedures, and the sensors feature a hygienic drainable design. They are 3A-authorized, EHEDG certified for hygienic use, and designed for fast and easy cleaning.
