Flowmeter: Turbine design excellent for water applications

08/16/2007

Turbine flowmeter designs retain their popularity due to their straightforward design and reliability. They can be improved in some cases with the addition of electronic counter technology to replace mechanical indicators and totalizers. The new digital FlowCom from McCrometer combines turbine simplicity with electronic signal processing for its Water Specialties propeller meter for a wide range of applications.

Designed to replace electro-mechanical counters, the FlowCom Model FC101 features a two-line display designed for easy reading. The five-digit top line indicates flow rate and the eight digit bottom line provides volumetric flow data. Up to 22 different output measurement units, including gallons, cubic feet and liters, are user selectable.

With its capability for either direct reading or remote monitoring, the company says it is ideal for direct mounting as well as remote or large SCADA monitoring applications in a wide range of water and water treatment applications. With its remote-mount option, the display can be mounted away from confined spaces for easier access.

The FC101 digital display retrofits with the Water Specialties propeller meter and is available with four different output options: contact closure, open collector, optically isolated open collector, and a 4-20 mA loop. The FC101 is programmable via a simple magnetic wand with menu-driven features and includes a four-digit access lock-out to maintain security. All electronics are sealed in a NEMA 4X enclosure for use in rugged operating environments.

Powering options include a long-life lithium battery, or for remote monitoring, a 12-40 Vdc powered 4-20 mA loop configuration that can be integrated with a distributed control system (DCS). Measurement accuracy is +/- 2% of reading. The meter family covers flow ranges from 35 to 200,000 GPM with sizes from 2 to 120 in.

McCrometer’s family of turbine flowmeters are reportedly excellent for applications in municipal water and wastewater treatment, agriculture, turf irrigation, drip and sprinkler irrigation, and marine systems testing.
