Second-generation flywheel-based clean energy storage system from Pentadyne Power delivers 50% more power than the previous version with the same footprint (5 sq ft) and cost. VSS+DC delivers up to 190 kW of power and 2,700 kW/s of energy. Unit transfers seamlessly to an engine generator for a continuous power system. Flywheel power is said to improve UPS reliability by completely replacing or extending the life of lead-acid batter-ies used in UPS configurations. VSS+DC eliminates ventilation and cooling requirements and reduces lifecycle costs and maintenance and replacement needs. System features a 50,000-hr mean time between failure rate. Higher output of the VSS+DC permits integration with UPS systems rated at 225 kVA or less. To work with higher-capacity UPS, multiple units may be run in parallel without communications gear. Other features include environ-mentally friendly lead-free construction, 20-year design life, lightweight fiber composite flywheel, and zero friction loss.
