China Petroleum and Chemical (Sinopec) Corp. has awarded Shanghai-Foxboro Co. (SFCL) an approximately $500,000 turnkey contract to supply a Foxboro's supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for its new dispatching center, which will be located in the Xuzhou area in eastern China. The system will monitor, supervise, and control three major, multi-product pipelines reported to be strategically important to Sinopec's core operations. Sinopec is China's largest producer of petrochemicals and petroleum products. Shanghai-Foxboro is an Invensys joint venture.

Foxboro reports that its SCADA system will interface with three existing third-party SCADA subsystems, and enable Sinopec to gather, dispatch, transfer, and deliver its raw and finished products throughout this large, populous part of China. Ultimately, the Foxboro SCADA system will be expanded to supervise all Sinopec pipelines in China.

The dispatch center's SCADA system will include a mix of Unix and Microsoft Windows technologies, as well as Foxboro SCADA applications to help increase safety, improve pipeline operations, and enhance maintenance. An embedded Web server will give authorized Sinopec staffers secure, real-time access to real-time and historical pipeline information from anywhere via Sinopec's corporate intranet or the Internet.
