Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) president and CEO Pam Bailey has announced that the group is advocating legislative and regulatory reforms that will modernize the U.S. food safety net, and prevent problems before they arise to bolster consumer confidence in the safety and security of the food supply.

GMA has developed a comprehensive food safety reform proposal that places new regulatory mandates on food companies and that provides the FDA with the resources it needs to protect American consumers, including requirements for:

  • all food manufacturers to have a food safety plan in place;

  • all food manufacturers to have a foreign supplier safety plan;

  • an increase in FDA food-related spending;

  • establishment of new federal agricultural standards for fresh fruits and vegetables;

  • adoption of a risk-based approach for FDA inspections; and

  • establishment of mandatory recall authority for FDA in certain circumstances.
