Step-motor-based motion systems continue to work unheralded in some very tough industrial environments. Here’s an update on two recent product examples. Empire Magnetics Inc . has introduced “Abrasive Dustproof Stepper Motors” intended for aggressive manufacturing environments that destroy seals and bearings, leading to failure of standard stepper motors. Available in NEMA 23, 34 and 42 frame-sizes, these motors reportedly thrive in abrasive dust, such as grinding debris, carbide powder, glass particles and mineral components. These special motors feature o-ring seals to stop dust leakage at potential penetration points; housing seals with a shaft slinger and seal to prevent entry of dust into bearings; and motor insulation that allows 0-135 °C operation. Abrasive Dustproof step motors are now in use for manufacturing carbide tools and fiber-optics components, and as part of a powdered metal forming press, among others.

Empire Magnetics is a supplier of specialty motors, motion control systems, and support services.

Gettys’ WS-Series stepper motors include food-grade and caustic-chemical-resistant versions.

Elwood Corp.-Gettys Group also announced the release of its “WS-Series” wash-down Stepper Motors designed for use in harsh environments. The new motor line fills “the unique need for economical stepper motors capable of withstanding repeated high-pressure washdowns,” says David Hansen, VP of sales and marketing. Sealed to IP66 rating, these motors use o-rings and a shaft seal to protect against jets of high-pressure liquids. A 10-ft shielded cable with grommeted cable gland is standard. WS-Series stepper motors are available in NEMA 23, 34, and 42 mounting dimensions.
