The Abnormal Situation Management (ASM) Consortium has released a 2nd edition of its display design guidelines: "Effective Console Operator HMI Design Practices." This best practices guidelines book is based on the ASM Consortium's many years of research in the prevention, mitigation, and management of abnormal situations. Effective Console Operator HMI Design Practices is written for individuals who establish or assist in establishing company HMI standards, style guides, and information displays accessed by console operators through their control system workstations.

The ASM Consortium revised the display design guidelines after a span of 5 years, following its first 'Effective Operator Display Design Guidelines' published in 2008. The 2nd edition is revised based on the ASM Consortium's user members' current best practices, recommendation from recent ASM Consortium research, feedback from display design experts, and technology advances in the area of Human Machine Interface (HMI).

The new edition has revised and consolidated the number of guidelines to a total of 64, compared to 81 guidelines in the previous edition, and more than 50% of the guidelines are revised. In addition, the new edition contains a new section on HMI design philosophy and a new appendix summarizing results from an HMI design case study. New display design examples are included in the new guidelines book, including 28 new figures and 43 revised figures, for the benefit of HMI design engineers.
