Parsippany, NJ – The Hydraulic Institute Website offers some smart design, sizing, and application suggestions on how to save energy with pumps.
Hydraulic Institute pump energy tips include:
-Design systems with lower capacity and total head requirements;
-Despite a tendency to emphasize initial cost, select efficient pump types and size at the onset; -Use two or more smaller pumps instead of one larger pump so excess capacity can be turned off; and
-Use pumps operating as turbines to recover pressure energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Hydraulic Institute (HI) , the largest association of pump producers in North America, and Pump Systems Matter (PSM), an educational initiative to assist North American pump users gain a competitive business advantage through broad-based energy management and pump system performance optimization, are expanding the knowledge base of their Websites by making the presentations available. Each highlights methods and case studies for reducing pump system energy costs, while increasing energy efficiency.
At the HI 2008 Annual Meeting, a panel of users of pumping systems led by Douglas Kaempf, program manager, Industrial Technologies Program, Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), presented information on the topic The Push for Energy Efficiency in Pumping Systems.
Reduce industrial energy intensity 25% by 2017: In his 20-minute presentation, Kaempf spoke extensively about DOE efforts to help U.S. businesses reduce industrial energy intensity 25% by 2017. This included detailing the synergy between energy, the environment, and U.S. competitiveness, plus the necessity to treat energy “as any other natural resource.”
Additional presentations by industry professionals were offered by HI and PSM:
• Bill Behr, site energy conservation leader at Dow Chemical Co., highlights Energy Efficiency at Dow Chemical;
• Steve Schultz, corporate energy manager at 3M Corp., speaks on the importance and methods of Driving Down Energy Costs ;
• Rex Noble, Jr., P.E., engineering supervisor at FPL Services LLC, discusses Variable Speed Pumping for a District Cooling System; and
• Raul Santiago, energy manager at Eastman Kodak, details Energy Conservation at Eastman Kodak.
